Meghalaya CM: Assam SP's Letter With Church Details, Very Unfortunate

SHILLONG: Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, denounced the attack on churches and houses of worship in Chhattisgarh and demanded that the state government step in right away to guarantee that those responsible for this type of crime are brought to justice.

The Christian community has historically been the target of incidents like this, according to CM, thus this kind of behavior must halt immediately.

In particular, the Chhattisgarh government has been urged by CM Sangma to act on behalf of the district administration and state governments in those states to guarantee that those involved in this type of crime are brought to justice.

Conrad said that this is something that is really unnecessary and such documents are very unfortunate in response to a question about the letter sent by the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kamrup, who had requested information about churches established in the state in the previous year and instances of conversions in Assam.

Sangma said that this behaviour is both unusual and inappropriate.

Sangma added, "I saw the clarification, and the chief minister of Assam had mentioned that this was not an instruction provided by the government but was done by the local administration and he had also pledged that he would look into the case and this thing would be cancelled.

According to a previous report, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly disagrees with the letter sent lately by an SP of the Assam Police Special Branch, which requests important data on religious conversion and the number of churches in the state, among other things.

Speaking to the media, Chief Minister Sarma distanced himself from the letter and said that neither he nor anyone else in the government had been told of its contents or that it had been discussed at a forum.
